The trust was set up in memory of Gordon Wright, who lived in the Isle of Jura from the early 1980s until his death in 2000. While he occasionally liked to tell people that he grew up ‘just south of Edinburgh’ (by which he meant Birmingham) there is no doubt that Jura held a special place in his heart.

Before retiring, Gordon worked as a teacher and headmaster, both in the UK and overseas. In the early 1980s Gordon and his wife Carol, whose mother hailed from Jura and who herself lived on the island for a time as a child, moved to the island to care for an aging relative. Once there the couple threw themselves into island life, helping their daughter and son-in-law run the hotel, taking on the Antlers tearoom and post office, and supporting various local organisations. Gordon joined forces with Alan Byres in 1992 to launch the Jura Jottings – the island’s monthly newsletter which is still going strong today. He was also a keen member of the local history group, being a key contact for visitors with genealogy questions, and writing several booklets about the island. After his death in 2000 the Gordon Wright Trust was set up to support education and training for people from the island. This combined Gordon’s two great passions in life – education and Jura.
